CHAPTER 17

Sitting at his kitchen table in his and Tammy’s apartment, West studied the list of remaining lost ships. Tammy was busy on a project, so he was eating lunch alone.

They had rescued so many ships over the last few years, and had so many more to go.

Thousands and thousands and thousands more ships to go.

It sometimes seemed like an impossible task. Ships had been going missing for millions and millions of years. They had just vanished into Void Space Bubbles.

He put the list to one side, finished the last bite on his chicken sandwich, then picked up his dishes and put them in the sink. He was eating alone today because Tammy still had calculations to run and he didn’t want to break her train of thought. So he had made her a sandwich as well, wrapped it and put it in the fridge for her to eat later.

As he finished the dishes, he stopped and looked around, something he didn’t do that often in their busy life. He loved their apartment, the largest on the ship. A perk he got for being the Chairman. They had decorated it in brown tones and books. Both of them loved to read and also they both had an office here, plus a master bedroom that felt far too large. It had its own living room and furniture inside the master suite.

He left Tammy a note about the sandwich when she came out of her office in case he forgot to tell her, then picked up the lost ship list. There was still one ship on the list given to him by Chairman Ray that worried him. The name of the ship was the Orange Sun. It was a massive early generation mother ship.

A couple hundred years after it launched, it had contacted the first galaxy and informed them that a disease was spreading through the ship, something they had never seen before.

Just under a million people were on that ship.

And then suddenly the ship went silent.

Vanished.

The Orange Sun became known as the plague ship, even though Seeders were immune to everything. No one really knew what caused the problem, why the ship had vanished, or anything.

Searches over the millions of years had found no sign of the ship, so West figured one of three things happened. As they got sick, they just set the ship on autopilot and it kept going while everyone on board was killed by a mysterious disease.

Or they all left the ship for a planet’s surface to form a colony and perished over time.

Or they hit a Void Space Bubble and were still in the middle of fighting the plague that hit them.

Plagues on Seeder ships almost never happened and when they did they were easily solved and stopped. It was why no humans were allowed on a Seeders ship. When a human was known to have Seeder genes and the genes were activated, not only would that person live a long time, be able to teleport, but also had intense immunity against almost anything.
